(CNN) — On Thursday, Jimmy Jean-Louis finally received the phone call he had longed for: He spoke with his mother in Haiti. “I got a phone call from my sister who said she was able to reach home,” the Haitian native and “Heroes” cast member said. ” So I picked up the phone and my mom answered. The first reaction from both of us was simply to cry.” The actor had been searching for his elderly parents in Haiti after a powerful earthquake struck his homeland. Adding to his desperation to find them was the knowledge that the house he had grown up in had collapsed during the disaster, killing several of his relatives. Now he knows that his parents are safe physically, although they are sleeping outdoors for fear that their damaged home is not safe. While they are whole in body, emotionally and mentally his parents are in rough shape, Jean-Louis said. “They don’t understand what’s going on,” Jean-Louis said. “It’s almost like saying ‘Why [are we] living?’ Shock is an understatement.”

“Apparently they have not stopped crying ever since the earthquake happened,” he said, his voice breaking.

Jean-Louis was born in Petionville, Haiti Video, where he grew up without electricity or running water before moving to Paris, France, when he was 12 to pursue a modeling career. He has supported his parents by sending money home since he started acting nearly 20 years ago.

The actor, who is best known as “The Haitian” on the NBC series “Heroes,” returned from Haiti only a couple of weeks ago after spending the holidays with his parents. He was planning to return this month but will now be traveling much sooner to provide relief aid.

Jean-Louis said there is still no word on the many relatives and friends he has in Haiti. And while he is anxious not only to reunite with his family, he also wants to lend his support to his fellow Haitians.

He is the founder of Hollywood Unites for Haiti, a nonprofit organization whose original mission was to provide sports and cultural education to underprivileged youth on the island. Now he says their mission is to mobilize and offer whatever aid they can for earthquake survival.

He expressed gratitude for the many people of all nations who have come together to support his country in its desperate hour of need.

“I am very, very happy that there is unity,” he said. “Only through unity will we be able to overcome the catastrophe.”

Canadian crooner Michael Bublé is getting hitched to his Argentinian actress girlfriend, Luisana Loreley Lopilato de la Torre – and has been engaged for the last two months, his longtime rep confirms exclusively to PEOPLE.

“Michael proposed to his girlfriend, Luisana, in November, in front of her family in Argentina,” rep Liz Rosenberg says. “They’re ecstatic. They’re adorable, in love and laugh all day long.”

Lopilato, 22, a film and TV actress who stars in the hit Argentinian soap opera, Atraccion x 4, accepted his proposal – and loves the diamond engagement ring from Vancouver jeweler Minichiello that Buble, 34, gave her to seal the deal, a friend of Bublé’s tells PEOPLE. “He designed the setting himself. He’s very proud to be engaged to her.”

The “Lost” and “Home” singer met her after one of his concerts in Buenos Aires in November 2008. “They met at a party the record company threw for him after his show in Buenos Aires,” says the friend. “The head of the label wanted to introduce Michael to Argentina’s most famous actress. When he met her, he said it was love at first sight.”

Their Families Have Met

Their families have met “several times and are all very happy about this union,” says the friend.

Lopilato, who shot to stardom as a member of the band Erreway and on the soap opera Chiquititas, is working on her next film, Plumiferos. Bublé is gearing up for his “Crazy Love” tour, which begins in March.

The couple has tried to keep their romance “low-key,” says the friend. “She travels with him when she can. She was with him when he recently appeared on David Letterman and when he performed on Australian’s Idol X-Factor in front of the Sydney Opera House.”

Lopilato may also accompany him to New York City on Jan. 30 when he performs as the musical guest on Saturday Night Live. She even appears in the video of his current hit single, “Haven’t Met You Yet.”

The couple spent New Year’s in Hawaii, where they “had a great time,” says the friend.

Bublé was engaged to his longtime girlfriend, singer and actress Debbie Timuss, but split up in November 2005. He also dated The Devil Wears Prada actress Emily Blunt for more than two years, but split with her in 2008.

Bublé and Lopilato haven’t set a date for the wedding yet, says Rosenberg.

Ivanka Trump, 27 years old, announced her engagement to New York Observer owner Jared Kushner, 28 years old. They have been dating for two years and since July 2008, Ivanka has been reportedly studying to convert to Judaism under Rabbi Haskel Lookstein at Kehilath Jeshurun Synagogue on the upper East Side. Ivanka thinks they’re perfect together since both of them are very ambitious.

“Jared and I are very similar in that we’re very ambitious. That’s what makes it so amazing to be in a relationship with someone who is supportive of that,” Trump told New York Magazine. “I’m happy for him when he is in the office working late. I know how good that feels when you sit down and return e-mails.”

A memorial service held for Steve McNair today with as many as 5,500 people in the Mt. Zion Baptist Church. Fans and friends can attend a visitation from 3:45-6 p.m. CT. Police said McNair’s shooting death on Saturday was part of a murder-suicide lead by his 20-year-old mistress, Sahel Kazemi.
